China Jewelry Industry Report Explores How Wedding Market Propels Diamond Jewelry Sales

Jewelry, the preferred product in Chinese wedding market, has presented robust performance bolstered by the demand for value preservation and enhancement in recent years and has become the fourth hot sector of consumption following home appliance, housing and automobile in China. As of the end of 2011, the annual sales of jewelry in China exceeded RMB300 billion, an increase of 2.4 times from RMB88 billion in 2000.

Among the jewelry products, gold, platinum and diamond jewelry are the most popular. Additionally, emerald and pearl jewelry also garner particular attention from the market.

Gold Jewelry.
China is the second largest gold jewelry consumer after India. The consumption of gold jewelry in China amounted to 357.1 tons in 2010, accounting for 62.5% of the national gold consumption; and the figure grew 27.9% YoY to 456.7 tons in 2011.

Platinum Jewelry.
China ranks No. 1 in platinum consumption in the world for years and consumed 52.4 tons of platinum jewelry in 2011, making up 68.3% of the global total.

Diamond Jewelry.
China starts late in diamond jewelry consumption but witnesses rapid development, and has become the second largest diamond jewelry consumer after the United States. The boom is principally propelled by the wedding market, especially the demand for diamond rings, and the investment market.

Leading Players
The flourishing jewelry market of China fuels a number of competitive domestic enterprises, such as Chow Tai Fook, Laofengxiang, Chow Sang Sang and Old Temple Gold. Meanwhile, the international leading brands including Cartier, De Beers and Tiffany also enter the Chinese market and have occupied the high-end jewelry market of China.

Moreover, the company actively develops new products and now boasts four new kinds of products including “emerald, jade, pearl and natural gemstone” jewelry, in addition to the traditional four categories of products like “gold, silver, platinum and diamond” jewelry.

Israel Diamond Museum Opens First Silver Judaica Exhibition

A remarkable exhibition of Israeli silver Judaica entitled “Chains of Silver” was officially opened yesterday at the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum (HODM) in Ramat Gan. Attending the ceremony were the former Chief Rabbi of Israel and Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv Mr. Israel Lau, Mayor of Ramat Gan Mr. Zvi Bar, Chairman of the Executive of the museum and President of the Israel Diamond Exchange Mr. Yair Sahar, Chairman of the Israel Diamond Institute Group (IDI) Mr. Moti Ganz and President of the Israel Diamond Manufacturers Association Mr. Bumi Traub. The exhibition will be open to the public from April through July. The curator of the exhibition is Yehuda Kassif, art director of the HODM.

This exhibition is the first at the museum to deal with the important field of Judaica, which increasingly attracts collectors all over the world. According to Yair Sahar, whereas most of the previous exhibitions were devoted to diamonds and jewels that adorn the body, this exhibit deals with glorifying the soul. “What are presented here are the jewels of faith, the ornaments of religious precepts, and the adornments of good deeds,” Sahar said.

Guest of honor Chief Rabbi Lau said that the importance of silver religious objects is seen over 3000 years ago during the exodus from Egypt, when the Jewish people carried with them “utensils of silver, gold and clothing.” He said that there is a strong relationship between silver and diamonds: both are precious substances, both represent traditional Jewish professions and both enabled wealth to be easily transferred from place to place.

The exhibition features more than 70 magnificent silver pieces, created by the Israeli artists Mauriciu Samuel and Itzhak Luvaton. Some of the items are based on traditional designs and include ritual wine cups, spice boxes, mezuzot and Hanukkah lamps. Others are intricate silver sculptures of everyday objects – a Harley Davidson motorcycle and sidecar, a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, a bicycle, an airplane, the solar system, a ferris wheel – which have hidden within them ritual objects such as Shabbat candle holders, wine cups, Torah
pointer, miniature books of Psalms, or Chanukah spinning tops. These objects are at once faithful miniature replicas produced in a precious metal and at the same time functional ritual objects for Jewish religious observance.

Mauriciu Samuel is the third generation of a family of silversmiths. Born in Romania, he trained professionally with his father, Meister Leo Samuel and master artists in Israel. Itzhak Luvaton was born in Israel. He began as a jewelry maker and designer and completed his training at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. Both studied etching under Yasha Ben-Zion and have since become artistic partners in the field of Judaica. Their works are found among the most prominent Judaica collections, at museums and galleries, and in synagogues around the world.

Jewelers of America Political Action Committee Pushes Jewelers Issues in 2012

JAPAC, the Jewelers of America Political Action Committee, has set a busy legislative and fundraising agenda in preparation for the 2012 elections in November. JAPAC is the only PAC that supports the fine retail jewelry industry in Washington, D.C.

In June, JAPAC Board members and Jewelers of America leaders will head back to the nation’s capital for another round of meetings on Capitol Hill. During their “fly-in,” JAPAC Board members will meet with a number of legislators, including members of Congressional committees with jurisdiction over issues of importance to the jewelry industry, such as the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees. This is the second annual trip JAPAC is making to D.C. Once again, they will ask representatives to stand up for jewelers on issues like sales tax fairness and protection of LIFO — the last-in, first-out accounting method.

“Lawmakers have the power to either help or hurt jewelers’ businesses with the decisions they make. That’s why jewelers need to be at the table, telling their stories and influencing those decisions,” says JA President & CEO Matthew A. Runci. “Meeting with legislators in person, so they can hear directly from their constituents in the jewelry industry, is one of the most effective ways we have to get our messages across.”

The trip is the centerpiece of JAPAC’s efforts to give jewelers a voice on key issues. The fundraising strategy also includes the participation of the JAPAC Board, whose members are charged with generating support for the PAC. JAPAC also has an online platform at Jewelers of America’s website, www.jewelers.org, which was recently updated to enable JA members to contribute to the PAC online.

In 2010, JAPAC made its biggest and most successful contributions to political campaigns. Ahead of the midterm elections, JAPAC contributed to the campaigns of 28 pro-business candidates in tight or “toss-up” races. Of these, 22 went on to win and many now serve on key committees. JAPAC is hoping to have an even more successful year in 2012.

Jewelry Information Center to Produce Fashion Show at 2012 American Gem Society Conclave

Jewelry Information Center (JIC), the consumer education arm of Jewelers of America (JA), has again partnered with the American Gem Society (AGS) to produce the Supplier Fashion Show and Showcase Reception at the 2012 AGS Conclave, at the Doral Golf Resort in Miami, FL. The event takes place on Wednesday, April 25, capping off the first day of the four-day educational and networking conference.

“Jewelry Information Center is thrilled to once again bring its trend and event expertise to the prestigious American Gem Society’s Conclave. The Supplier Fashion Show is a high-energy platform to spotlight beautiful jewelry collections, while connecting retailers with jewelry suppliers,” says JA COO Robert B. Headley.

The fashion show gives AGS Conclave attendees an up-close and exclusive look at the jewelry collections of thirty-four leading designers. Like the couture runway shows of top fashion designers, the runway will come alive with models wearing designer jewelry — some worth millions — and dresses by Chloe & Reese.

Supplier Fashion Show attendees will be treated to a post-show cocktail reception, where they can mingle with industry peers and enjoy music, cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres. At the reception, retailers can see the jewelry up close on the models and view additional jewelry in the designer’s showcases.

“The American Gem Society is delighted to provide this opportunity for our supplier and retail members to engage, and network. By combining the strength of our membership and the expertise of the Jewelry Information Center team, we are able to provide a fashion and networking experience at Conclave that truly sparkles,” says Ruth Batson, Executive Director and CEO of the American Gem Society.

MJSA Announces Scholarship Opportunities

MJSA, the association for jewelry makers, designers, and related suppliers, is seeking students to apply for scholarships that it funds through the MJSA Education Foundation Scholarship Group.

The Scholarship Group consists of five permanent endowment funds managed by the Rhode Island Foundation on behalf of MJSA and the MJSA Education Foundation. Money generated by these funds provides support to students enrolled in jewelry design, jewelry making, or other jewelry-related programs and courses at colleges, universities, and technical schools throughout the United States. Several awards of $500 to $2,000 are given every year.

Last year, the Scholarship Group awarded nearly $7,000 to six recipients studying at various institutions. Since 1997, the MJSA Education Foundation, a 501(c) 3 subsidiary of MJSA, has awarded more than $160,000 in scholarships to students. Applicants can be enrolled in any kind of jewelry training program, as long as they intend to pursue a career in the jewelry industry, and can demonstrate financial need. The student is assessed on the basis of course of study, academics, career plans, recommendations, and industry experience. All applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The 2012 scholarship information is now available at www.mjsa.org/careers_and_education. You will find a link there to the Rhode Island Foundation, which administers the MJSA Foundation scholarships. Click on the Scholarships for College-Level Study link to find the MJSA Education Foundation Jewelry Scholarships and apply there. Because the Rhode Island Foundation administers many scholarship funds, students will need to complete a general registration and application online. The site will list all available scholarships, among them the MJSA opportunities.
