While colored diamonds have taken on a life of their own in recent years, the vast majority of diamonds are white diamonds, otherwise known as transparent or colorless diamonds.
Colored diamonds come in yellow, brown (otherwise known as champagne diamonds), red, orange, blue (e.g. the Hope Diamond), pink and more. Colored diamonds are the most rare diamonds.
The diamond color scale defined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) ranges from D to Z, D being white diamonds and Z representing the lower end of the scale.
While an untrained eye is unable to differentiate between mild differences between diamond colors, the trained eye is used to comparing them to diamonds of known colors under precise conditions and controlled light.
